Take Cover

Garages and carports have been on my mind lately for two reasons – first, we have been house hunting. Second, we have been considering going into business to convert garages into usable rooms. That is a good prospect over here, where land is at a premium and we sall have to make use of every available square foot unless we live in very remote areas. A garage attached to a modern house can be converted and used as a dining room, office or playroom instead of an expensive storage area. In the States things are generally very different as most homes have large plots where you can get creative with separate carports for vehicles so that the house can be kept for living. They also make some very funky steel buildings where you can use your imagination: these would be a great area for noisy kids to play their music, for example. If you need a workshop there are plenty of metal buildings that are functional, but I prefer the wooden hunting lodge in the picture. I am unlikely to get a place where I can ever use a building like that, but I can dream ….
