Controversy
I have a membership on Facebook and I find it fairly useful for sharing photos and keeping in touch with my younger relatives, who seem to be addicted to using the site. I have some reservations about aspects of Facebook, though and I do not use the site for any valuable or sensitive material for that reason.
The owners of the site have walked into a number of rows over objectionable content, for example there was a recent controversy over Holocaust denial. This happened after a group was set up there which actively denied the holocaust. I have been invited to join several Facebook groups that I found distasteful, but none of them preached such obscenties. I have also seen groups that seem ready to form lynch mobs to pursue suspected paedophiles, without checking their innocence first.
The recent row came when Facebook bosses decided they could not prosecute group members unless they lived in a country that had a specific law against holocaust denial. They even seem to think it is a good idea for discussing controversial ideas – depends how you define controversy, I guess.
